The Andrews Labor Government is on track to deliver families on the Surf Coast greater access to the health services they need, with site preparation works underway and designs revealed for the new Torquay Community Hospital.

Member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman today visited the hospital site to mark this important next step for the $675 million Community Hospitals Program.

Located at 10 South Beach Road in Torquay, the new Torquay Community Hospital is one of 10 small public hospitals being built across Victoria in some of the state’s fastest growing areas.

The Hospital will focus on integrated clinical care to support people to be cared for and receive treatment at home or in community settings.

It will provide a range of outpatient care, nursing allied health and urgent care services for minor, non-emergency medical issues such as bumps, cuts and bruises.

These services will help take pressure off nearby hospitals including the University Hospital Geelong – allowing them to focus on critical care and acute health issues, and emergency care.

The designs revealed today show the facility’s exteriors and internal spaces, which have been carefully considered to create safe and comfortable environments for staff, patients and families.

Community members, Barwon Health, Surf Coast Shire Council and other key groups helped shape the look and feel of this facility through the project’s Community Consultative Committee.

Retaining a connection to nature, using coastal colours and honouring the local Indigenous cultural heritage were some of the top priorities.

The site preparation works underway include important geotechnical investigations, fencing and other early works to prepare the site for main construction, which is on track to get started in 2023.

To be operated by Barwon Health, the new purpose-built facility will expand the services currently offered at Torquay Community Health.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA), the Torquay Community Hospital is on-track to be completed in 2024.
